Lo Specchio e Sylvia Plath

Solo pochi giorni fa ho recensito Mirror di Suzy Lee. La lettrice che me lo ha prestato, mentre discutevamo di identità, di specularità, della possibilità di avere un sguardo curioso su se stessi, si è ricordata della poesia omonima di Sylvia Plath.

La Plath è una delle più famose poetesse statunitensi. Nata nel 1932 e morta suicida nel 1963, ottenne un premio Pulitzer postumo, nel 1982.

La sua storia d’amore con il poeta Ted Hughes, da cui ebbe due figlie che eliminò parte dei diari della Plath, è stata raccontata in un film del 2003, Sylvia, interpretato da Gwyneth Paltrow e Daniel Craig.

E’ molto amata anche in Italia e visto che, come ho notato altre volte, parliamo poco di poesia e ne leggiamo pochissima, potrebbe essere un’autrice da cui partire per riprendere confidenza con questo genere letterario.

La poesia Mirror ha due diverse traduzioni. Mi è stata consigliata quella del poeta Giovanni Giudici. Per il momento vi riporto il testo in Inglese, di cui mi ha colpito il verso Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall. Prometto che andrò a cercare la traduzione di Giudici, sempre che non facciate prima voi a postarla nei commenti.

Mirror

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful-
The eye of the little god, four cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.
